Health is dynamic, a constant physiological and emotional balancing act, sustaining a state of homeostasis in our body and mind. We continuously adapt to life’s imperfection and assaults. The way we manage experience is our most intelligent response based on our resources at the time. As our resources are depleted, our system is susceptible to overwhelm.
Once in overwhelm, we resort to drawing energy from other sources within us, to contain it. The containment is so effective we may forget that we are holding this trauma until another incident arises. At that moment we surprise ourselves with our inability to “fight it off”, or “let it go”. We ask ourselves, “why has such a small thing brought us to tears, or caused such pain, or taken so long to heal?”
The nervous system is now on red alert and it takes more than a walk in the park to calm it down. We must now send in reinforcements to assist in rebuilding the resources that the body has depleted to manage this overwhelming circumstance.
In the deepest governing part of our being, underneath this overwhelm, is a force of wellbeing, a constant potential for resolution and resource. To align with this potential or potency is to begin the return to health. It is like a wave, a tidal motion, surging throughout the cranoisacral system of the body.
The Biodynamic Craniosacral Practitioner taps into and tracks this motion, this potency of health, assisting in its expansion in and through areas of holding and tension. With a light touch, deep listening skills and patience, the practitioner follows the lead of Health as the system prioritizes the restoration of the body’s intelligence and the release of patterns of tension and stress.
Because we are complex beings, and have developed such intelligent strategies to hold and contain our suffering, often times the resolution unfolds in layers. This is also an intelligent strategy, as letting go all at once could be retraumatizing.
It is recommended that several sessions of craniosacral therapy is most effective in resourcing the body back to health.
The Client’s Experience
Most often the client is clothed lying face up on a comfortable massage table.
Unlike traditional massage therapy, where the client can feel every stroke that the therapist makes, most clients experiencing Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy feel very little during the session.
My hands are gently positioned at the head, sacrum, shoulders or feet; most any part of the body can accommodate the work. Sometimes, the client can feel a soft sense of relief or release from physical or emotional tension. Increased relaxation, decreased head pain or pressure, calm nervous system, less busy mind are just a few of the noticed sensations during and after a session.
To retrain the body to recognize this healthier state and have the resources to hold it, a number of sessions may be recommended.
